PES welcomes the introduction of Culture Cheques for young people in Malta

The PES welcomes the introduction in Malta of a Cultural Pass for all secondary school students.

The socialist government led by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, currently holding the EU Presidency, decided to allocate a fund of 120 000€ to the Malta Arts Council to allow all secondary school students to take part in cultural and artistic productions.

Maltese Minister for Culture Owen Bonnici declared: “We want to give every student the opportunity from a young age to be able to appreciate art and culture”.

PES President Sergei Stanishev said: “The socialist government in Malta, led by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, is sending a strong signal of commitment to the youth. We will thrive for this example to be followed in other EU countries, alike what has been done by our PD comrades in Italy.”

The PES launched in June 2016 an ambitious European Youth Plan (www.youthplan.eu), calling specifically for the introduction of Culture Cheques for all young people to have access to cultural events, heritage and take part in artistic creations. We will create a network of PES Culture Ministers to exchange best practices in this respect.
