Stanishev, Pitella, Slimani plead for sufficient funding for Youth Guarantee

We believe in youth, we believe in Europe! And we want to create jobs and opportunities for young people.

Our President Sergei Stanishev, the President of the S&D Group in the European Parliament Gianni Pittella and Laura Slimani, President of the Young European Socialists, have written to the President of European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, asking to secure appropriate funding for the European Youth Guarantee for the period 2016-2020.

The letter highlights President Juncker’s public commitment in his last ‘State of the Union’ address for young people to become a priority of EU policies.

We are proud of the Youth Guarantee, a policy we started up back in 2012, which has already helped 9 million young people with an offer of employment, apprenticeship, traineeship, or lifelong learning.

Stanishev, Pittella and Slimani regret that a programme which is credited to be very successful by the European Commission itself will only get €2 BN, this means that 75% less money will be available for the Youth Guarantee: “We call for €20 BN to be made available. This proposal initially came from F. Hollande and M. Renzi, and we stand for it”, they wrote.

The PES considers the Youth Guarantee to be a structural reform. Stanishev, Pittella and Slimani reminded Mr. Juncker of his public commitments:  “In Strasbourg, you promised you would not accept that Europe remains the continent of youth unemployment. We call on you to ensure that Europe invests in young people”.

We believe in youth, we believe in Europe! That’s why the Party of European Socialists is launching a Europe-wide event on November 16 to support our European Youth Plan. Join us for a better, more progressive Europe!
